Scott Newman

Pastor for Discipleship

Brief description of what you do at SCBC:
I came here to SCBC in the summer of 2013 and have been in love with Santa Cruz ever since! Currently, I’m the Pastor for Discipleship which means that I do everything I can to support our church family following after Jesus in his mission to make all things new! Specifically, I oversee our classes, Growth Groups, Missional Communities and our Rooted discipleship experience.

What was your first car?
It was a 1984 Honda CRX 2 seat hatchback that my parents bought from a friend for $500. They figured if I only had one extra seat in my car, I couldn’t get into too much trouble with it.

Where’s your favorite spot in Santa Cruz county?
There’s so many amazing spots here, it’s hard to choose! I love surfing at Pleasure Point, and I love riding my bike in Nisene Marks!

Favorite place to eat in Santa Cruz?
515 Kitchen and Cocktails. One of the hippest places in Santa Cruz!

What are your top 3 favorite movies?
Inception, Gladiator and Monty Python: The Search for the Holy Grail

What’s your hidden talent or a fun fact about you?
I seem to have a knack for remembering lots of random, useless information. I should try to get on Jeopardy or something.

What was your first paying job?
Burger King… it was awful. I don’t think I’ve been back to a Burger King since!

Favorite food?
Hands down it would have to be lamb!

Favorite quote?
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” – Abraham Kuyper

Hometown
Los Angeles, CA

Favorite book?
Ok, outside of the Bible… I would say either The Mission of God by Chris Wright, Death By Living by N.D. Wilson or Paradise Lost by John Milton

What would your ideal day off look like?
I’d sleep in, play with my kids at the beach, take a bike ride up into the mountains and go on a date with Katie in the evening and somewhere in there squeeze in an hour or two to just sit and read a good book.
