Civil Conversations seek to create a safe space where people on opposite sides of some of the major issues of our day can come together to seek greater understanding of another viewpoint.

This is a significant part of what it means to love our neighbor as ourselves! If we all have longings to be understood and not misrepresented, then we need to love our neighbors by doing them the honor of listening to them and seeking to understand them as faithfully as we can. As we demonstrate this kind of listening, learning love, we believe that we will grow in empathy and compassion, two ingredients necessary for people to live together in peace and necessary for making progress on the challenges in our world together.

The Christian Faith and Tradition gives us ample resources for learning to have meaningful dialogue across our differences. From the very beginning, Christian missionaries developed ways of sharing the gospel while seeking to understand and engage positively with the cultures to which they were sent. The motive of listening and learning is always love, and developing the skills to interact with people with whom we disagree is about being formed in love so that we can embody the love of Jesus to everyone we encounter.
